Donor delivers saliva into the Oragene•DNA collection container.	Capping the container releases DNA-preserving fluid which then mixes with the saliva. DNA is now stabilized at room temperature until it is analyzed at the lab.

DNA Collection with Saliva

DNA Yield with Oragene•DNA (pdf):
Oragene•DNA gives higher yields than other oral collection methods. The median yield from Oragene•DNA samples is 100 ug. In comparison, buccal swabs may yield as little as 1.9 ug of DNA.

The median bacterial DNA content of Oragene•DNA samples is 6.8%. In comparison, bacterial DNA content with cytobrush and mouthwash samples is as high as 88.5%.

Increasing DNA yield by collecting more saliva (pdf): The Oragene•DNA DNA Self-Collection Kit instructs donors to collect 2 ml of saliva. If more DNA is desired, up to 4 ml of saliva can be collected for a proportional increase in DNA yield.

DNA Yield is Proportional to Saliva Volume (pdf):
The DNA yield from Oragene•DNA is proportional to the amount of saliva. Less than 2 ml of saliva results in proportionately less DNA yield.
