"The collection protocol is very convenient, the extraction is very quick and simple, and the yield is great. Our downstream applications include PCR, restriction enzyme digestion and sequencing. We have collected numerous family members who were not willing to go for a blood draw, as well as children, elderly patients and overseas relatives. The ease of shipping and self-collection are remarkable. Our lab is very impressed with this timely product."

The DNA Genotek Gut Microbiome Grant Program – Recipients

We are pleased to announce the recipients of the DNA Genotek Gut Microbiome Grant Program to you today. The quality of the applications we received exceeded our expectations and the selection committee had a difficult task to review and evaluate each proposal carefully before selecting the winners. The recipients are:

Who: Dr. Brinda Rana
Institution: University of California, San Diego, USA
Project: Microbial Signatures of Aging: A Twin Study

Our goal is to investigate the role of the gut-brain axis on cognitive and brain aging in our longitudinal twin cohort (> 1200 twins; > 600 pairs). Specifically, we propose to investigate how different genetic and environmental factors (e.g. stress, sleep quality, smoking behavior) interact with the gut microbiome to manifest in age-related diseases and risk factors for cognitive decline and dementia.

Who: Dr. Zongqi Xia
Institution: Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, USA
Abstract: Interrogating the gut microbiota community in the early stage of multiple sclerosis

The proposed experiments aim to interrogate the influence of human genetics and environmental factors on the gut microbiota in the early stage of MS and test the hypothesis that distinct microbial composition can predict the earliest detectable stage of MS in high-risk individuals.

Who: Dr. Lena Kirchner Brahe
Institution: University of Copenhagen, Denmark, Copenhagen
Abstract: Effect of a low FODMAP diet on gut microbiota, inflammation and gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with colitis ulcerosa

The aims of this project are 1) to examine the effect of a low-FODMAP diet on GI symptoms, inflammatory markers and quality of life in patients with colitis ulcerosa; 2) to explore the effect of a low-FODMAP diet on the gut microbiota; and 3) to explore whether the response towards a low-FODMAP diet can be predicted by a patients initial gut microbiota profile.

Please join us in congratulating these two outstanding researchers. We wish we could have awarded more grants as we reviewed so many worthy applications. Thank you to everyone who applied for the DNA Genotek Gut Microbiome Grant Program and we wish you the best of luck with your research projects.

The DNA Genotek Gut Microbiome Grant Program is designed to foster innovative and novel proposals for the use of DNA Genotek’s OMNIgene®•GUT fecal/stool collection kits and services for scientific work in the field of microbiome research.

The Gut Microbiome Grant Program will reward scientists who are striving to accelerate the advancement of microbiome genetic research and to gain knowledge to facilitate progress in this field. The successful proposal will enhance the understanding of how the gut microbiome contributes to health and disease. All of the following applicants are encouraged to apply:

  1. Established researchers in the microbiome field
  2. Junior/new research entrants in the microbiome field
  3. Human Genomics researchers that are adding a microbiome component

Eligible researchers should complete the Gut Microbiome Grant Application and submit this to DNA Genotek by 12:00pm ET (GMT -5) on April 30, 2015.

Application deadline: 12:00pm ET (GMT -5) on April 30, 2015.

Awards and amounts:

The awards are as follows:

2 awards of:

  • (up to) 100 OMNIgene●GUT microbiome collection kits to facilitate collection and stabilization of fecal/stool samples for use in the execution of the proposal.
  • (up to) $15,000 USD in services* OR (up to) $10,000 USD for researchers who have their own labs

1 award of:

  • (up to) 100 OMNIgene●GUT microbiome collection kits to facilitate collection and stabilization of fecal/stool samples for use in the execution of the proposal.
  • (up to) $5,000 USD

* Services may include a selection from:
