The DNA Genotek Developing Economies Grant Program – Recipients
We are pleased to announce the recipients of the DNA Genotek Developing Economies Grant Program to you today. Please join us in congratulating these three outstanding researchers. We wish we could have awarded more grants as we reviewed so many worthy applications. Thank you to everyone who applied - we wish you all much success in your research endeavors.
Human Genomics:
Who: Dr. Marcela Brocco
Institution: University of San Martin - CONICET, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Project: Non‐nvasive biomarkers of maternal stress during pregnancy resulting in alterations in postnatal brain epigenome
Prenatal stress (PS) impacts early behavioral and cognitive development in human infants. Moderate to severe stressful life events are closely associated with increased child morbidity, neurological dysfunction, and attention‐deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We hypothesize that epigenetic modifications in the brain might be mirrored in salivary DNA which would represent a reliable, non‐invasive source to profile epigenetic alterations. Our objective is to develop early biomarkers to detect PS‐induced epigenetic reprogramming of the infant brain.
Microbiome:
Who: Dr. Marilia Seelaender
Institution: University of Sao Paulo, Brazil
Project: The gut microbiota and cancer cachexia: a new clinical perspective
Cachexia, characterized by severe and involuntary loss of skeletal muscle and adipose tissue, is directly responsible for the death of at least 20% of all cancer patients. Systemic inflammation is commonly observed in patients with cancer cachexia and has been postulated to play a key role in the etiology of the condition. We intend to understand the association between the composition of intestinal bacteria and systemic chronic inflammation in cachectic cancer patients as to propose therapeutic strategies.
Infectious Disease:
Who: Dr. Fatima Khalid
Institution: University of Kassala, Sudan
Project: Detection of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis in body fluids (saliva, urine)
Tuberculosis is a major public health problem worldwide, especially in developing countries. The problem becomes worse due to emergence of drug resistance and HIV co-infection. Rapid detection of the agent and effective treatment are two important factors in controlling the disease. Our goal is to diagnose and predict TB drug resistance from saliva and urine using molecular diagnostics. We will also compare the molecular method from saliva and sputum with the standard method (culture).
The DNA Genotek 'Developing Economies Grant Program' is designed to foster innovative and novel proposals for the use of DNA Genotek's DNA sample collection kits for human genetic and microbiome research in developing economies.
The DNA Genotek Developing Economies Grant Program will reward scientists who are striving to accelerate the advancement of human genetic, microbiome or infectious disease research in their developing economy. The successful proposal will address a localized or global health concern and strive to provide a significant positive impact to human health.
Researchers (established or junior) are encouraged to apply from the following eligible institutions:
Application deadline: Applications are now closed.
Eligible researchers should complete the Developing Economies Grant Application and submit this to DNA Genotek by 12:00pm ET (GMT -4) on June 30, 2016.
