DNA Genotek's Helping Hands Program
Our DNA Genotek Helping Hands program is designed to assist organizations that are innovators in disease research, disease prevention and treatment. Within this program, DNA Genotek applies its technology and expertise to break down barriers that impede DNA sample collection or treatment and prevention of disease. The experience we have garnered enables us to support programs that have a long-term impact on significant numbers of people and cover a diverse range of health issues. The goal of the program is to help accelerate research and advance the fight against disease across the globe.
The Bahamas Breast Cancer Initiative Foundation
DNA Genotek provided marketing support to the Bahamas Breast Cancer Initiative Foundation to facilitate DNA collections at a series of highly successful events at the Atlantis Resort. The current BBCIF program offers genetic testing and counseling to all newly diagnosed women with breast cancer and ovarian cancer in The Bahamas. Ongoing studies are designed to determine the risk of hereditary breast cancer in women in the Bahamian population.
Spit for Africa program bridges the gap between Africa and the western world in genetic research
Spit for Africa is a sponsorship program from DNA Genotek in conjunction with the African Society for Human Genetics (AfSHG). The program is designed to improve access and reduce the cost of DNA collection for African funded research projects such as The Human Heredity and Health in Africa Initiative (H3 Africa), and to facilitate growth in membership of the AfSHG. Collecting DNA samples in many areas of Africa can be challenging. With non-invasive collection and ambient temperature storage, Oragene facilitates easy DNA collection in low-resource environments. Oragene is an all-in-one system for the collection, stabilization and transportation of DNA from saliva. Increasing the accessibility of Oragene kits to researchers in Africa will allow them to more easily conduct population-based genetic studies.
DNA Genotek Inc. and BioServe Biotechnologies, Ltd. to Support Genetic Study of Craniofacial Anomalies in Ethiopia
DNA Genotek and BioServe Biotechnologies, Ltd are jointly providing support for a genomic study into craniofacial anomalies (cleft lip and palate) in Ethiopia. The project, titled "Collaborative study on gene- environment interaction in craniofacial anomalies", will investigate the genetic and environmental causes of craniofacial anomalies (cleft lip and palate) with the ultimate aim of prevention. The research project will be conducted by principal investigator Dr. Mekonen Eshete of Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia with the support of external advisers and collaborators - Professor Peter Mossey of the University of Dundee and Dr. Azeez Butali of the University of Iowa.
Attracting donors for an HLA registry at a major music festival
DNA Genotek responded to a request from Anthony Nolan, the UK's largest bone marrow donor registry, for support at an event-based collection at the Isle of Wight music festival.
Supporting the Virginia Commonwealth University Spit for Science study
Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) wanted to engage as many freshmen students as possible in a research project aimed at understanding how genetic and environmental factors contribute to the development of problems related to alcohol use and emotional health.
Expanding recruitment for the PROCAS study
DNA Genotek is helping the University of Manchester improve their recruitment numbers for a study which aims to predict breast cancer risk for women who attend routine screening.
The Tomorrow Project
DNA Genotek is proud to support the Tomorrow Project as it works to find out more about the causes of cancer and other health conditions. The Tomorrow Project is looking to recruit 50,000 Albertans to participate in the largest health research project undertaken in Alberta. As a regional study in the national initiative, the Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow Project, The Tomorrow Project has joined forces with others provincial studies and is aiming to track the health of tens of thousands of people over the next 50 years! DNA Genotek is working to accelerate research and advance the fight against disease across the globe. Here in our local province of Ontario, DNA Genotek is proud to be a Community Ambassador for the Ontario Health Study. As the largest regional study within the Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow, the Ontario Health Study is aiming to establish a large, high-quality population laboratory by compiling an extensive database of health-related information from Canadians over decades.

Accelerating Breast Cancer Research
DNA Genotek has expanded its support of the Spit for the Cure events by partnering with the Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) to collect DNA saliva samples on-site at the Susan G. Komen Western New York Race for the Cure®. The race is held each June at the Delaware Park Rose Gardens in Buffalo, NY.

Donation of Bandages to Treat a Neglected Tropical Disease
DNA Genotek is donating compression bandages to treat podoconiosis in Ethiopia. Podoconiosis is a disease occurring in individuals exposed to red clay soil derived from volcanic rock in tropical Africa, Central America and northwest India. Characteristics of the disease include swelling of the foot and lower leg which progresses to elephantiasis, having a severe impact on mobility and quality of life for those affected. Podoconiosis affects the poorest of the poor in developing nations.

Accelerating Epilpsy Research
DNA Genotek partnered with the Columbia University Family Studies in Epilepsy to collect DNA samples onsite at the National Walk for Epilepsy. The National Walk for Epilepsy provided an excellent opportunity for the study to accelerate its research by accessing significant numbers of candidates who satisfy donor profile requirements.

Establishing a Breast Cancer Risk and Assessment Biorepository
DNA Genotek partnered with investigators at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences to establish a biorepository aimed at breast cancer risk and treatment with a goal of collecting 100,000 DNA samples over a five period. The collection stations were located at support venues for the Arkansas Chapter of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Run for the Cure event.
