DNA is used to determine the pedigree for livestock or pets.
Collection
Q.
How much DNA can you obtain from an Oragene•ANIMAL sample?
A.
Using 2 sponges to collect saliva into an Oragene•ANIMAL kit, the median yield is 11.6µg from a dog.
Q.
How long will it take to collect a DNA sample from a dog using an Oragene•ANIMAL kit?
A.
Collection time will vary between individual animals depending on temperament. Typical collection takes between 30-60 seconds.
Q.
What is the shelf life of Oragene•ANIMAL kits?
A.
2 years prior use. The expiration date of each kit is printed on the label found on the side of the collection tube.
Q.
How long is the DNA stable for?
A.
Canine DNA is stable when collected in Oragene•ANIMAL kits at room temperature for 6 months post collection.
Q.
What do I need to ship these kits to and from dog owners?
A.
Animal samples are considered "Exempt Animal Specimens" according to the International Air Transport Association. For support documentation, please consult: Mailing Solutions.
Q.
Can these kits be used for animals other than canines?
A.
Yes. Oragene•ANIMAL kits are extremely adaptable to use with other mid-sized companion and laboratory animals. Contact us for more animal specific information.
Storage
Q.
At what temperature should I store my saliva samples in Oragene•ANIMAL?
A.
Oragene•ANIMAL stabilizes the DNA in saliva across a range of temperatures. Saliva samples may be stored at room temperature or frozen at temperatures such as -20°C or
-80°C, depending on which is most convenient for you. Please note that storage at 4°C is not recommended for Oragene samples. Consult our "Oragene•ANIMAL Quality Yield" application note for more details.
Q.
Can saliva samples in Oragene•ANIMAL be frozen and then thawed?
A.
Yes, saliva samples may undergo at least five freeze-thaw cycles with no evidence of DNA degradation. Please consult our "Long-term Storage Recommendations" for more details.
Purification
Q.
What is the best way purify my Oragene•ANIMAL/saliva samples?
A.
Q.
Can the Oragene•ANIMAL kits be purified using automated DNA extraction robots or methods other than the ethanol precipitation protocol supplied with the kit?
A.
Q.
What is the best way to quantify my DNA yield?
A.
We recommend quantifying your DNA with a fluorescent dye such as SYBR Green or PicoGreen (Molecular Probes) because these dyes bind to double-stranded DNA. Quantification by absorbance will tend to over-estimate the amount of DNA because of absorbance by RNA co-purified with the DNA. For more details, please consult our quantification protocols. DNA Quantification using the Rotor-Gene Real Time PCR Instrument or DNA Quantification using SYBR Green I Dye and Micro-Plate Reader.
Q.
How can I remove the RNA from my samples?
A.
Please consult our "RNA removal by double-RNase digestion" for more information.

"I found the Oragene•DNA collection kit very simple to use. The protocol was easy to follow and time-saving permitting me to perform the extraction amplification and analysis steps in a single day."
