DNA Genotek Expands Product Portfolio with New Oragene®•ANIMAL DNA Collection Kit

DNA Genotek, the leading provider of products for biological sample collection, today announced that it has launched a new product that offers researchers and veterinarians an easy, painless and proven solution for collecting DNA saliva samples from animals.

The addition of the Oragene•ANIMAL kit expands the DNA Genotek product portfolio which includes the company's flagship Oragene•DNA product line for human DNA collection. The Oragene•ANIMAL product is primarily geared towards DNA collection from mid-sized animals such as canines.

All genetic research and testing starts with the collection of DNA samples. Genetic testing with animals is subject to approval by ethics review boards that serve as gatekeepers to oversee and evaluate all aspects of an institution's animal care and use program. Because traditional DNA sample collection methods, such as blood, are invasive, they require stringent ethics approval and processes that ultimately increase costs and decrease the number of samples collected.

Unlike those methods, Oragene•ANIMAL provides painless, non-invasive collection of DNA from saliva, thereby facilitating faster and easier approval from ethics review boards, while improving animal well-being. Oragene•ANIMAL also allows researchers to increase the number of DNA samples collected because collection can be done easily and reliably by a pet owner at home and sent back to the researcher or veterinarian by mail. This results in cost reduction and increased convenience as pet owners can avoid clinical visits for DNA testing.
